Back of the Yards College Preparatory High School – Chicago’s soccer team approached us about creating a new logo and uniforms for their team. Their primary logo (pictured below) could use an update with a more soccer-centric focus.
Back of the Yards is a neighborhood in Chicago comprised of immigrants. According to the Encyclopedia of Chicago, “the concentration of railroads in the mid-nineteenth century, the establishment of the Union Stock Yard in 1865, and the perfection of the refrigerated boxcar by 1880 led to a giant expansion of meatpacking in the neighborhood.” Lithuanian, Czech, Polish, Irish, and German immigrants all settled in the community in search of job opportunities afforded by the meatpacking industry.
The Union Stock Yard Gate is a prominent remnant of the neighborhood’s past and the centerpiece of the team’s new design. The stripes at the bottom of the crest represent 47th street; the location of the school.
